Colin Kaline Standing In The Shadow Of A Giant

Colin Kaline Standing In The Shadow Of A Giant
Grandson of Tiger great Al Kaline, Colin Kaline grabbed a lot of attention as he played an exhibition game against the Detroit Tigers for the first game of spring training. Although hitting 0-for-4 I feel that he shows a lot of promise, Colin was a high school star. As a senior he hit .535 and only struck out three times in 187 at-bats of his final two seasons. Colin was drafted by the Tigers last year in the 25th round, but chose to Go to Florida Southern University. I hope to see this kid in a Tiger uniform within four years if not sooner.
Standing in the shadow of a giant is a frightening task, but once in a great while you will see someone rise above what the world has put in front of them. It was 1961 when the unlikely happened, by an unlikely person who knocked out a giant when he would rise above with 61 home runs. Roger Maris was an unlikely person to break The Babe’s record and so was everyone else who had tried before him, however he chose not to listen to what the world was saying. It cant be done people would say. This record would later be broken six more times. It only takes one person to say it can be done, it only takes one person to do it. I am sure that growing up Colin Kaline was told how his grandpa was the best, was better then him, could have hit that ball, could have made that catch… and so on.  Colin Kaline has a giants shadow that he is standing in and he knows it. I only wonder how Colin will react to what stands before him.  Will he step out of the shadow and make a name for him self, or will he let the shadow of the legends that came before him overtake who he is meant to be?

Growing up a Red Sox fan I had several oppportunities to watch Al Kaline play the game.  His generation was one of "we" and not "me".  Those old Tiger teams were fun to watch.  Hope that his grandson makes it, however, talent and the will to succeed will determine if he arrives in the "Bigs".
